What is Yuan's Garden?

Yuan’s garden was the original location of the “Grand View Garden” in the masterpiece “Dream of Red Mansions”. It was its author Cao Xueqin’s original residence. In the thirteenth year of Qing Emperor Qianlong (1748 AD), another well known scholar, Yuan Mei, purchased this garden and named it “Yuan’s Garden”. It was one of the three famous gardens in Southern China in Qing Dynasty.

Who is Yuan Mei?

As a talented scholar and poet of the Qing Qianlong period, Yuan Mei wrote many influential poems throughout his lifetime. He was also interested in gourmet, whenever he encountered some delicious food while visiting a friend, Yuan Mei would let his private chef to study the recipe and cooking method from the chef of his friend. In over 40 years, he had gathered a huge number of precious recipes, which makes the heritage legacy of “Yuan’s Garden Collection of Recipes”

“Yuan’s Garden Food List” uses a large amount of space to describe in detail the 326 kinds of North and South dishes popular in China from the 14th to the 18th century. It is a very important diet in the Qing Dynasty.

What happened then?

In recent years, a famous Chinese culinary master, the former executive chef of Nanjing Jinling Hotel, Mr. Xue Wenlong chose about 100 dishes from the Yuan’s Collection, and categorized them in their original order. The original comments from Yuan Mei was attached with each of the recipes.

In 1995, Mr. Ge Feng, the founder of Suiyuan Restaurant, began his work at Nanjing Grand Hotel and studied Yuan’s Garden styled cuisine. After moving to Vancouver in 2008, he found Xiaonanguo Restaurant and introduced the Yuan’s-garden-style-dish overseas for the first time. The ancient gourmet treasure, Yuan’s garden dishes revived in Vancouver.

In 2018, Mr. Ge Feng opened his second restaurant in Vancouver, Yuan’s Garden Jiangzhe Cuisine Restaurant, at 8077 Alexandra Rd, Richmond, BC, it is a more convenient location for locals to experience the authentic cuisine of the Yuan’s garden. Additionally, the highly praised Xiaonanguo Restaurant is also reopened in the Aberdeen food court.

Mr. Ge is proficient and creative in various cuisines and has won numerous awards in his career. He has his own unique insights into the cooking of quality seafood.

A native of Nanjing, Mr. Ge, operates “Xiaonanguo Shanghai Restaurant” and “Yuan’s Garden Restaurant” in Vancouver. Both restaurants specialize in Jiangsu and Zhejiang cuisines, and are popular and well received by Vancouverites and became one of the favorite destinations for Vancouver gourmands.
